Programme Wetenschnapps XL: Science with and for citizens

Good co-operation or collaboration is essential for meaningful contact between science and society. Collaboration between citizens and researchers, between support and academic staff, between universities and stakeholders, between researchers. We will explore aspects of this collaboration in this XL-edition of Wetenschnapps, the inspiration and development events organised by the Centre for Science and Culture. This time in the Utrecht Science Week, for research and support staff of Utrecht University, UMC Utrecht, Wageningen University & Research, Eindhoven University of Technology and Leiden University.

Do you work in a team that sometimes engages a general audience? Do you plan to develop public activities? Do you have knowledge and experience in public engagement to share, or do you wish to learn from colleagues? Join us on this Wetenschnapps! We share inspiration and knowledge and together we work on achieving effective public engagement.

A. Plenary session: panel discussion on collaboration between citizens and researchers

With special guests Margaret Gold and Helianthe Kort we discuss collaboration between citizens and researchers. What are the benefits of such collaborations for researchers? What is in it for participating citizens? How can collaboration be mutually beneficial? How can citizen science increase the relevance of research results for people affected by the issues under study?

Margaret Gold MBA is Program Manager Citizen Science in the Dutch National Program Open Science, and co-ordinator of the Citizen Science Lab of Leiden University.

Prof. dr. Helianthe Kort is lector at Hogeschool Utrecht and professor at Eindhoven University of Technology. She specializes in research on the impact of the built environment on health, with a focus on how citizens and researchers can together contribute to suitable solutions.

B. Parallel sessions: Shared Stories

In Shared Stories we hear from and talk with research and support staff about their lessons learned and experiences with citizen science, team science and other forms of cooperation to achieve good public engagement:

1. Seed Fund Lessons: have you ever applied for Public Engagement Seed Funding to realise a public engagement activity, or do you plan to in the future? This is your chance to learn from your colleagues, share your own experiences and get inspired with new ideas. With a.o. prof.dr. Els Rose and dr. Anouk Keizer (both UU)
2. Citizens and Scientists: who are the citizens joining our projects, how do we reach them and how can we make the collaboration work? With a.o. dr. Liesbeth Feikema (UU/ CenSAS) and dr. Saskia Stevens (UU)
3. Citizen Science and data: How do we ensure reliability and safety of data in citizen science projects? We reflect on data-challenges you can expect in citizen science projects, and how to tackle these. With a.o. dr. Timothy Price and Fleur Froeling (UU), dr. Rik Janssen (FAIR Research IT Program UU), Dorien Huijser (RDM Support UU) and ir. Jonathan de Bruin (FAIR data & Open Science, UU)
4. Team Science: how can research and support staff co-operate to enable better public engagement? With a.o. prof.dr. Erik van Sebille, dr. Nieske Vergunst and dr. Stans de Haas (all UU)

C. Parallel sessions: Workshops - learn with and from each other

1. Measuring Impact: How can you know if your public engagement activities are effective? In this session you will learn how to measure the impact of your own activities. Bring your own (plan for an) activity and make a measuring plan for it during this workshop. With dr. Madelijn Strick (IMPACTLAB), dr. Frances Wijnen and dr. Nieske Vergunst (all UU)
2. The Impact Plan Approach: How can you make a strategy with your team for effective impactful engagement activities? Together with experts from NWO, you will make an impact plan with and for your team. Ideally, come with (part of) your team. With Jelte Verberne and Piet Lommerse (both NWO)
3. Dialogue Training: how do you talk with a general audience about research? A scientifically based training by dialogue expert Cathelijne Reincke (UMC Utrecht). Also useful for support staff looking to support researchers on this aspect!
4. Design a public engagement activity: How do you translate your research into an attractive public engagement activity, and how do you go from plan to event? You can get to work with your own idea and leave with tools, tips and insights on how to realise it. With experts José de Wit and Miranda Thoen (both Centre for Science and Culture).
